Adjustment In The Profit And Loss A/C Prepared By The Assessee

All the assessees are required to prepare their profit and loss account according to the provisions given in the Income-tax Act and only those expenses are to be allowed as deduction which are actually allowable expenses. But sometimes, assessees prepare their profit and loss account without adhering to the provisions of Income-tax Act. In such cases the persons are supposed to correct the profit and loss account prepared by the assessees in the light of the provisions of law.

The following are the important mistakes committed bythe assessees while preparing their profit and loss account :

(i) Certain expenses are charged or debited to the profit and loss account but these expenses are not admissible either fully or partly.

(ii) Certain admissible expenses are omitted from charging.

(iii) Certain incomes are not credited to the profit and loss account.

(iv) Certain other income not falling under this head of income are unnecessary credited to the profit and loss account.

How to adjust such Mistakes or Irregularities ?

1. The expenses which are not allowed but charged to the profit and loss account, the amount of such expenses are to be added back in the profit given in the profit and loss account. On the other hand, if any expense is omitted or lesser amount is charged, then the actual amount is allowed to be deducted from the profit given. If any expenses is charged in excess, the excess part is to be added in the profit given.

2. If any income or receipt related to the business or profession of the assessee is omitted, the amount so such receipt is to be added in the profit given.

On the other hand, if any income not related to the business is added on the credit side of the profit and loss account, then the amount of such item is to be deducted from the profit given.
